Oregon legislation that will require hearing aid insurance coverage for children was signed by the Governor on June 18, 2009. House Bill 2589 requires health benefit plans to provide payment, coverage or reimbursement for one hearing aid per hearing impaired ear for an enrollee under 18 years of age, or 18 years of age or older who is eligible as a dependent under the plan and enrolled in an accredited educational institution. The maximum benefit amount is $4,000 every 48 months.
Oregon will now join the thirteen other states that provide coverage for hearing aids. For more information, please contact Rend Al-Mondhiry, ASHA's Director of State Legislative and Regulatory Advocacy, at ral-mondhiry@asha.org or by phone at 800-498-2071, ext. 5665.
