ACTION ALERT: Health Care Reform Must Include Rehabilitative and Habilitative Services

(09/09/2009)

Please send a message to your U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative thanking them for including both rehabilitative and habilitative coverage in the Senate and House versions of health care reform. Also, please ask them to retain these provisions moving forward.

As a part of the critical benefits package requirements in the bills, "rehabilitative and habilitative services" are listed as part of the minimum services to be covered. For speech-language pathologists and audiologists as well as the individuals they serve, this means that people with speech and hearing needs cannot be denied coverage or treatment based on the grounds of their disability, nor based upon the cause or onset of their disability.

Ensuring that this important benefit remains in any version of health care reform that passes Congress is crucial to those with speech and hearing service needs.
