The U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced the award of more than $108.8 million in fiscal year (FY) 2009 Early Reading First (ERF) grants to 28 local education agencies and other public or private organizations. The grants are intended to improve the school readiness of young children, especially those from low-income families. A number of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have been awarded ERF grants, and as key members of the team responsible for helping students learn to read and write, SLPs are often the first professionals to identify the root cause of reading and writing problems through a child's difficulty with language.
Please visit ED's Web site for more information on the ERF grant competition and list of FY2009 grantees, or contact Catherine D. Clarke, ASHA's Director of Education and Regulatory Advocacy, via e-mail at cclarke@asha.org or by phone at at 800-498-2071, ext. 5611.
