On September 24, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) held the first of many stakeholder meetings to gain input on the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), also known as the No Child Left Behind Act. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan stated during the meeting that it is the role of the federal government to support reform at the state and local levels while encouraging high standards. He also indicated that NCLB may inadvertently encourage states to lower standards.
Over the coming months the Obama Administration will be developing its NCLB reauthorization proposal. ED will continue to host several topical forums in the fall that focus on specific issues within the reauthorization. The forums are part of the department's "Listening and Learning" tour seeking public input about changes to the ESEA. Please visit ED's Web site for more information on the upcoming ESEA stakeholder forums or contact Catherine D. Clarke, ASHA's Director of Education and Regulatory Advocacy, via e-mail at cclarke@asha.org or by phone at 800-498-2071, ext. 5611.
