Last year, great legislative accomplishments were achieved for ASHA members and the individuals they serve. From achieving SLP supplier status to expanding hearing and speech benefits in Federal Employee Health Benefit Plans—success was attained through two professions, one discipline: Advocating Together.
My name is Katie Bromley and I'm the new Director of Grassroots and Congressional Advocacy at ASHA. As we move forward in 2009, I'm excited to work with ASHA members to increase your involvement in grassroots advocacy, which is one of the quickest and easiest ways to be involved in ASHA's 2009 Public Policy Agenda.
I am calling all ASHA Members in 2009 to be an ASHA Advocate. Being an advocate is simple: login to ASHA's advocacy site and check to see if you're already a member. If so, please update your record with your home address (remember...you vote based on your home address, not your work address). If you're not already in the system, it takes just a few seconds to sign up. The e-mails you get will come directly from me, and will include hyperlinks so you can quickly and easily send your legislators messages about issues that affect the professions.
I know you're busy and you might be wondering how you're going to add another task to your to-do list. But I promise, taking action will absorb less than 30 seconds of your time and will reap huge rewards. With over 135,000 members, ASHA has the muscle necessary to improve public policy by informing and educating members of Congress about issues that affect audiologists and speech-language pathologists.
Visit ASHA's Take Action site and catch up on alerts you may have missed. I thank you in advance for your commitment to advocating for the professions and the people served by you and your colleagues. Feel free to contact me with any questions regarding ASHA's grassroots activities at 202-624-5951 or kbromley@asha.org.
