Sound Reading: Literature Lists for Phonology and Articulation (2005). By Angela Sterling-Orth; Thinking Publications http://www.ThinkingPublications.com, 1-800-225-4769. 43-page book, $18. Reviewed by Ardell Fitzgerald, Albuquerque, NM.

Sound Reading: Literature Lists for Phonology and Articulation contains lists of children's books that are organized by phoneme and positions in words. Over 300 books have been selected by the author to incorporate into articulation and phonology treatment for children ages 2-10. Each title has target word suggestions, author, publisher, and age/interest level. Seven to 15 books are included in each of the 26 categories of sounds with over 300 books listed. All consonant phonemes are represented as well as several consonant blends (/s/,/l/ and /r/) and vocalic /r/ and final /l/. Sound Reading also includes four pages of background information on using children's literature to develop articulation and phonology skills, an appendix listing book titles alphabetically, and a blank form to keep track of additional titles.

The author has selected books that are easy to find, colorful, and interesting. Many well-known authors of children's literature are represented. A quick search of Amazon.com for the 14 books listed on the /k/ page showed that all titles are available and are inexpensive. Many of the selections contain rhymes and predictable language. An added benefit of using good children's literature is the opportunity to enhance emerging literacy skills.

The chart format of Sound Reading makes it a pleasure to read. The only caveat is that target words for each book are not categorized by ease of facilitation or context.  Consequently, the beginning clinician will need to select targets with care. This inexpensive book of lists is a convenient resource and timesaver for the speech-language pathologist who does not have an extensive knowledge of children's literature.
