Book Review
Hearing Aids . (2001). By Harvey Dillon. Thieme Medical Publishers, 333 Seventh Ave., New York, NY 10001. 528 pages, $59. Reviewed by Kathryn Beauchaine, Omaha, NE.

This is an important new book for students, teachers, and professionals who evaluate patients for use of amplification and who fit hearing aids on patients of any age. This book is current and comprehensive, with 450 pages of text supported by 980 references and 181 illustrations. Each of the 16 chapters begins with a one-page synopsis that provides an overview of the topics within that chapter. Within each chapter, information that is considered essential to that topic is highlighted along the margin. Additional text provides further details on the topic. Tables, figures, footnotes, and explanatory summary panels within each chapter clarify the text or inform the reader of practical information. Some data and clinical procedures are published for the first time in this book.

Following an extensive introduction, explanations of hearing aid circuitry and hearing aid systems lead into a discussion of electroacoustic measurement options. Compression systems and advanced signal-processing devices are meticulously examined. The importance of ear impressions and earmolds is explored, with drawings, tables, and figures illustrating the carefully written text. Candidacy and prescriptive approaches form the basis for a chapter on selection and adjusting hearing aids. Covered in some depth are outcome measures and the emotional and counseling aspects of the amplification fitting process. Consideration is given to binaural amplification and pediatric amplification. Dillon’s extraordinary skills as a teacher are showcased throughout the book.

This book was a joy to read. Dillon’s ability to explain complex concepts in a user-friendly manner enhances the reader’s understanding of every aspect of the amplification process. The organization of the book allows the reader to access information at many levels. The book should be part of any practitioner’s or instructor’s library.
