The ASHA Leader Online LETTERS

Kudos for Apraxia Article

Hats off to Christina Gildersleeve-Neumann for her excellent article, "Treatment for Childhood Apraxia of Speech" (Nov. 6, 2007). It was so clear, practical, and well-written that I cut it out to take to work with me.

As a clinician, it can be frustrating to read articles that, while they contain thorough and extensive discussions of theory, statistics, or research, contain little information practical enough for a school-based SLP with a caseload of 40 or more students to implement.

Reading Ms. Gildersleeve-Neumann’s article, however, I was easily able to picture how I might convert her suggestions into a set of step-wise IEP objectives.

Thank you, Ms. Gildersleeve-Neumann, for reminding me of the basic principles of motor learning and how they are best applied to the treatment of children with apraxia of speech.
