Caudate nucleus: a component of the basal ganglia that has a tail-like ("caudate") shape

Corticobulbar tracts: nerve-fiber bundles projecting from the motor cortex to the nuclei of the cranial nerves within the brainstem

Gyrus: a convolution between two or more sulci

Hemodynamic: refers to rate of blood-flow volume

Innervation of the vocal-tract musculature: impulses of the cranial nerves that "steer" the respiratory, laryngeal, and orofacial muscles

Intrasylvian: in the depth of the Sylvian fissure, located at the lateral surface of each hemisphere

Sulcus: a narrow furrow on the brain surface

Supplementary Motor Area (SMA): a region of the brain located within the medial or middle wall of the frontal lobes
