How the Certification Standards Define Professional Development

  1. The certificate holder is the learner. 
  2. Content is related to the science or contemporary practice of speech-language pathology, audiology, and/or the speech/language/hearing sciences. 
  3. The result is the acquisition or enhancement of knowledge and skills necessary for independent practice in any practice setting and area of practice. 
  4. The certificate holder is responsible, based on ASHA's Code of Ethics, for determining that the activity is appropriate, relevant, and meaningful to any practice setting and area of practice. 
  5. Attendance must be documented by a third party, i.e., employer or sponsoring organization.
