Active Listening Strategies

In meetings, use active listening strategies. Sometimes the way a question or statement is framed can help facilitate a discussion while avoiding confrontation. Here are some to consider:

  • Please correct me if I'm wrong, but…
  • I appreciate what you have done, and hope you'll consider….
  • Can I ask a few questions to see if my facts are right?
  • Let me see if I understand what you are saying.
  • Let me show you where I have trouble following your reasoning.
  • Is there any reason we couldn't ….?

And finally, when faced with a question you simply don't know how to answer, you can try, "Let me get back to you." Then, agree on a specific date by which you will get the answer to the question.
