Included within the article in the Aug. 14 issue, "Understanding Intervention for (C)APD," are many suggestions for treatment of auditory processing disorders. Most of these suggestions consist of historically accepted activities that supposedly strengthen auditory perceptual skills. However, to the best of my knowledge, few, if any, of these methods have been tested to determine their efficacy as therapy strategies. Although I myself have used many of these materials and activities through the years, I question their effectiveness.
Yet there are proven strategies on the market that do indeed change auditory perceptual skills, with independent research to back up their efficacy. Fast ForWord and Earobics are two such products, which were not even mentioned in this article. One has to wonder why they have not been mentioned. Both products have been designed and tested and are easily administered in a controlled environment which affects their outcomes, unlike the informal use of many of the products described in the article. If our professional organization is going to publish an article listing the available interventions for a particular type of disorder, it seems reasonable to expect the article to cover all the proven and successful approaches.
