The ASHA Leader Online LETTERS

Building Momentum for Change in the Schools

I read the article by Judy Montgomery in the April 17 issue of The ASHA Leader that talked about what she would do if given a second chance to be a clinician in the public schools.

As I read, I was thinking, "Wow, look at what we could be." You had taken all of the hot topics that school-based SLPs have been exposed to and incorporated it into one article. The scenario you described is everything we are striving to be in our district.

My question is, how do we get there? Momentum for change is hard to facilitate. In our district we have some dynamic SLPs and our administration is overall very supportive. However, we continue to be in a holding pattern; change is hard. I believe the main issue we have is administration does not fully understand what SLPs can provide, and SLPs don’t have the concept of how funding works and what our role could be in response to intervention.

Where do we start? I want my school-based practice to be the way she describes in the article—the first time around. I want to make a difference, know it, and be happy. To feel this satisfaction in your career—what a wonderful way to earn a living!
