I would like to applaud Kenneth J. Mylott's letter to the editor in the Nov. 7, 2006, issue of The ASHA Leader. Mr. Mylott is not alone in his shock at the paucity of free CEU opportunities that ASHA extends to its members. One would expect that with annual dues of $200 (and that does not include the CEU registration fee or special interest division fees), ASHA would include some amount of CEUs as a benefit to members. I do recognize that members of special interest divisions obtain some CEUs as part of their affiliation; however, ASHA members must pay the CEU registration and Special Interest Division fees to receive this benefit.
I would like to offer a suggestion that may help rectify this disservice. Has anyone suggested allowing ASHA members to obtain CEUs for reading The ASHA Leader? I know I personally find the information in this publication to be as relevant and informative to our profession as reading my Division 13 Perspectives newsletter. Allowing members to earn credit for reading the articles in The Leader would go a long way in helping ASHA to truly be an advocate for members.
Incidentally, I would like to extend my appreciation to Passy-Muir Inc. who, like LinguiSystems discussed in Mr. Mylott's letter, offers free online CEUs to SLPs.
