The ASHA Leader Online LETTERS

Autism and OCD

Having worked with children with autism spectrum disorders and pervasive developmental delay for 30 years, I read with interest the article "A Unique Mind" in the Jan. 23, 2007, Leader. The amount of literature on this subject is now staggering, along with the increased identification. With this increased labeling, I am also noticing some children whom I see presenting with many more traits associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder, especially with the high-functioning autistic group. In her table, the author noted some "pedantic" style in the Asperger's syndrome language, but I was hoping to see some other aspects of this need for control and organization noted. I would love to hear if others are seeing similar trends and if the author has some ideas on this topic.
