I was pleased to see the article, "Using Cadavers for Teaching Anatomy of the Speech and Hearing Mechanisms" (The ASHA Leader, Sept. 5, 2006).
The Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at Vanderbilt University also uses whole-body cadavers as part of its graduate anatomy education. At Vanderbilt, the students perform the dissection themselves under the guidance of Professor Ralph Ohde. I am a 2004 "non-traditional" graduate of Vanderbilt, having worked in the corporate world for 20 years, and count Dr. Ohde's anatomy lab as one of the most extraordinary and inspiring
learning experiences of my life.
