The ASHA Leader OnlineLETTERS

Volunteer in Swaziland

Thank you to all those who responded to my December 2005 article in The ASHA Leader about volunteering in Swaziland. This summer I had the opportunity to return to the sites where I had volunteered last year. After meeting with the headmistress of St. Joseph's Mission school, she has generously agreed to provide on-campus accommodation for any speech-language pathologist or audiologist interested in volunteering.

Housing would be free for the duration of the volunteer's stay and can sleep up to four people if there is interest in going as a group. The house includes bedrooms, a sitting room, a bathroom and a kitchen. There is a refrigerator and electric hotplate for food preparation.

Professionals can choose their length of stay and work with students in the special education program or in general education. There is an orphanage nearby that could also use assistance. Please feel free to e-mail (b.staley@hotmail.com) or call (847-533-7868) for pictures and additional information.
