The ASHA Leader OnlineLETTERS

Costly CEUs

I would like to thank LinguiSystems for offering free CEUs to speech-language pathologists-and contrast this with what ASHA offers.

LinguiSystems offers free CEUs. You would think that ASHA would extend the same courtesy to its members. Instead, ASHA's CEUs are among the most expensive in the country. If you were to get all your CEUs directly from ASHA, it would cost you several thousand dollars to fulfill your CEU requirement.

To put this in perspective, obtaining my CEUs to keep my nursing license active costs me about $80 (and these are medical training CEUs). I have several friends who are medical doctors and they are surprised that anyone has to pay for their CEUs. It is in the self-interest of the facilities that employ them to have well-trained staff and provide CEUs as a matter of course.

It seems to be in ASHA's self-interest to charge its own members extortionary fees for its CEUs while a company like LinguiSystems offers them free in an easy-to-fulfill format. ASHA should be written A$HA.
