The ASHA Leader OnlineLETTERS

Military Does Not Reject Stutterers

As the wife of a U.S. Naval Commander for 13 years, I can attest that the U.S. Military does not reject applicants simply because they stutter (see letter from October 18, 2005 issue). Over the years, I have interacted with at least two individuals who, although I as a licensed professional have determined that they do indeed stutter, were able to effectively communicate with their peers and Commanding Officers utilizing compensatory strategies. Both of the enlisted gentlemen that I am referring to enjoyed ranks as Petty Officer, First Class. The only communications that they may not have been allowed to participate in would be that of Air Traffic Control. Please join me in supporting our military!
