Remembering Our Leaders

I appreciated reading "In Memoriam: Mack Steer" in the Aug. 5 edition, as one of his many friends and as a former Indiana resident. I would like to make a brief addition to this fine article.

True, Mack studied under Lee Travis and other early, great figures in our profession at Iowa in the 1930s. His fellow students went on to be leading figures in our profession. However, one other leader in our field of communication sciences and disorders was omitted—Robert Milisen. Milisen and Steer were fellow students and roommates at Iowa. Following their graduation, they both founded departments of communication disorders in Indiana at their respective universities. While Dr. Steer went to Purdue, Dr. Milisen went to Indiana University in Bloomington. It is interesting that both became truly pioneers in our field, and in the same state at the same time.
