Direct Billing by SLPs

As an SLP in private practice for 25 years, I have been at a distinct disadvantage by not being able to secure a provider number that would have allowed me to bill Medicare directly for my services, unlike my physician, PT, and OT colleagues. This has forced me to subcontract from hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, and SNFs, making me dependent upon reimbursement from them rather than having the ability to bill Medicare patients directly.

I have inquired about this matter and have encouraged ASHA many times over the years to press for legislation to allow SLPs to bill directly. I am encouraged to see ASHA is planning to re-double its efforts in this matter. Unfortunately, it appears to have taken a 70% reduction in dysphagia assessment reimbursement to make this a primary goal.

When SLPs have the ability to bill Medicare directly for services rendered, only then will we be able to engage in private practice with the independence given to other health professionals.

Editor's note: Contact your members of Congress and request support for S. 568 and H.R. 1995. These bills would make a technical correction to the outpatient section of the Medicare statute to provide greater patient access to speech-language pathology services in private practice settings.
