Regional Variations in Transgender Population

I read your quiz in the Feb. 18 issue of The ASHA Leader on "What’s Your Multicultural IQ?" with interest, particularly since I am currently providing services to a small group of transgender clients (male-to-female) at the University of New Mexico Speech-Language Hearing Clinic, through supervision of graduate student clinicians. I also presented a session at our student NSSLHA Conference in March on "More Than Just Voice: Considerations in Addressing the Needs of MTF Transgender Client Populations."

With regard to this population, and your note that 1%–10% of our clients may well be transgendered, I was wondering if that might vary regionally. In New Mexico, we are proximal to Trinidad, CO, which is a center that provides sexual reassignment surgery services, and so I believe we may attract more transgender clients in this region.
