What a pleasure to see Judith Kuster's Internet column in the Dec. 24, 2002, issue of The ASHA Leader. The message in the article is to remember. Get your history out where you live so you can know about yourself and your place in the universe. It is very hard to tell where you are if you don't know where you've been.
When I left Minnesota this past summer, I looked for a home for my professional library that included numerous classics in linguistics and early audiology. I couldn't give these treasures away. I talked to a colleague who loved history and the professions but who was advised to remove any publication less than five years old from her own office space when her institution was reviewed. The sense was that the world is moving so fast that we can't allow history to cloud our changed understanding.
We need to remember! We also need to look at our colleagues who, for political purposes, seek to remove memory of those who have helped develop the professions. Thanks for remembering Bryngelson and Van Riper. How about getting a history Web site up and updated by graduate students? A start might be just to collect stories about these grandmas and granddaddies of speech-language pathology and audiology.
