The ASHA Leader OnlineLETTERS

Taking Evidence-Based Practice Seriously

I am writing in response to the article, "Evidence Survey Tests Members' Understanding of Evidence-Based Practice". I am a speech-language pathologist working in New York City with the early intervention population, primarily children with developmental delays and children diagnosed on the autism spectrum. I graduated with a master's degree in '03 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I pride myself on using evidence-based treatment methods. Unfortunately, I find myself in the minority here. Some of the more popular methods of treatment here are the ones that don't have any scientific backing, for example oral motor therapy. I am happy that ASHA is making an effort to promote evidence-based practice. However, it's hard to take ASHA very seriously when they advertise chewy tubes next to the article's scientific references.
