The ASHA Leader Online LETTERS

Military Rejects People Who Stutter

I would like to bring a very important issue to your attention. Our military has been concerned that recruiting numbers have been down as of late. However, my brother attempted to join several branches of the military but was rejected simply because he stutters. He is a very healthy young man and scored very well on his proficiency exams.

Yet he was turned away and treated very poorly by these recruiting officers.

This is very upsetting to me. I have tried contacting my area legislators to no avail. I am curious to know if ASHA is aware of this practice and if so, what is your position on this? As an ASHA member, I am looking to you and your readers for help with this matter. Most importantly, I want to make sure that everyone is aware of this situation.
