The ASHA Leader OnlineLETTERS

Newsweek Article Undermines Audiology

I was hugely disappointed in the recent Newsweek cover story (June 6, 2005) on hearing loss when I found zero references to audiology or audiologists. While it is not surprising that the physicians they quoted chose not to give us credit, it is obviously akin to running a story on education without consulting a single teacher. It is also abundantly clear that the organizations representing audiologists (ASHA, AAA, ADA, etc.) are not doing nearly enough to educate the public about the fact that audiologists are the experts in hearing. I believe that the article in question has undermined my profession more than many of us realize.

Editor's Note: ASHA's president responded to the Newsweek article, pointing out that audiologists are "in the forefront of efforts to prevent noise-induced hearing loss." Unfortunately Newsweek did not publish the letter.
