I just read the letter titled "Salaries and CE Costs" published in the Feb. 17, 2004 issue of The ASHA Leader. I was glad to see someone speaking out about the high cost of continuing education units (CEUs) offered through ASHA. I am a speech-language pathologist starting out in private practice, so I pay for my own CEUs. I am constantly looking for the cheapest way to obtain credits, rather than looking for the best programs or conferences I can find. I would like to purchase many of the programs offered through ASHA for CEUs, but they are simply too expensive. The Health Care conference was completely out of my financial reach.
Recently I gave an informational talk at an area school and I found out you can gain CEUs by submitting the information in the talk to ASHA. I then found out it would cost me $99 to submit that information to ASHA and then I would only earn 1 credit. I find $99 for 1 credit to be ridiculous. I can spend $75 for 6 credits through other programs. I am disappointed that I cannot afford to purchase the quality programs offered through ASHA. Instead, I am searching out the most affordable. I hope ASHA will give this issue more attention and offer more affordable options so that all SLPs can afford the quality programs offered through ASHA.
