I have learned many things after going to the Convention (let's not forget that "the" does belong before the word "Convention"). I learned these things from experience and many sources.
- Register early to save yourself a lot of hassle! I learned the hard way that ticketed events can sell out fast. I also learned that if you don't register early enough to get your badge by mail, be prepared to stand in line for 45-75 minutes to get your badge and check ticket availability. Thankfully, ASHA had people at the front of the lines directing us so things went very smoothly.
- The shuttle buses were great! If you're a cheerful bus driver who points out interesting sights, you can make a busload of tips!
- The presenters like the room cold so the attendees will stay awake. Bring a sweater!
- There are no couches around the convention hall because it's a public place that's always open. If there were couches, people would sleep there.
- Sadly, since handouts are supposedly available online (for me, only two of six are), the presenters feel that they no longer need to give them to you. Downloading from ASHA requires PowerPoint (which I don't have).
- Many people rudely left before the speaker finished. Did they give themselves credit for the whole time?
- There were at least 3,000 more people there than were expected.
- Get there early for the exhibitors' coolest stuff!
Good luck next year, ASHA!
