Membership
The Council of Editors consists of the editors of the scholarly journals, the editor of Contemporary Issues in Communication Science and Disorders (the NSSLHA journal), and the director of ASHA’s Publishing unit (ex officio); it is chaired by the Chair of the Publications Board. The Council’s agenda consists primarily of issues related to the ongoing management of journal operations. The Council also makes recommendations to the Publications Board on matters of policy that affect the journals. Because the editors are nonvoting members of the Publications Board, the Council provides a forum within which the editors can formally express their views, as a body, to the Board.
Meetings
The Council of Editors generally meets on the evening preceding the start of each Publications Board meeting held at the National Office and in the evening before the Committee Day meeting at the annual Convention. A report from the Council of Editors is included as an agenda item for the Publications Board meetings.
Terms of Office
Editors serve 3-year terms. The terms of the three editors of JSLHR are staggered, and the most senior editor serves as coordinating editor. Official terms of office are for calendar years, but generally the month preceding the start of an editor’s term and the 4 months following the term are considered transition periods during which responsibilities are shifted from the incumbent editorial staff to the incoming one. No sitting editor may serve two or more successive full terms. However, an editor's term may be extended in unusual circumstances at the Board's discretion.
