Editorial Budget Guidelines for 2007

ASHA provides a specific amount of money annually to support the work of each ASHA journal editor. The amount of each editor's budget was determined by the Publications Board and varies according to average manuscript workload. The budgets are included in the annual ASHA budget, which requires approval by the Legislative Council each November.

ASHA's centralized manuscript tracking system, Manuscript Central, is integral to the editorial support plan. Manuscript Central is administered and supported at the National Office and has eliminated many of the duties formerly handled by editorial assistants employed at each editor's institution.

An editor has the flexibility to use the budget for any of the following purposes and in the proportion that works best for the individual editor:

  • Travel to professional meetings for the purpose of promoting submissions to the journal or gaining editorial expertise
  • Supplies or equipment used for editorial work on the journal
  • Additional clerical personnel needs (in addition to the centralized support from the National Office) for manuscript processing or other duties to allow more dedicated journal time for the editor
  • Funding another individual to assume a portion of the editor's teaching or administrative responsibilities
