Editors' Award
An Editors' Award is presented each year to each editor's choice of the most meritorious single article appearing in each journal (or section, in the case of JSLHR) during the preceding calendar year.
Criteria: Winning articles are selected based on experimental design, teaching-education value, scientific or clinical merit, contribution to the professions, theoretical impact, and/or other indices of merit.
Typical Process: At the beginning of the calendar year, the editors from the preceding year ask their associate editors from that year to nominate three or more articles for this award based on the criteria above. The AEs may be asked to provide rationale for their nominations. The editors are free to ask others to provide feedback as well. The input of the AEs and any other reviewers is advisory; the decision of the recipient of the award rests with the journal editor.
By March 31, the editors each notify the director of publications and the Publications Board chair of the winning article and the authors. If editors so wish, they also may contact the authors of the winning articles. The Manuscript Central administrator pulls the authors' contact information from the MC database.
In early April, the director of publications will relay the Editors' Awards information to the appropriate person in Conventions and Meetings so that the authors will receive information regarding the awards ceremony at Convention. The director of publications also sends congratulatory messages to the authors.
The director of publications relays the information to the Publications Board and makes arrangements for the publication of a booklet containing the winning articles, which is then distributed at the Awards Ceremony at the Annual Convention.
The editors and the chair of the Publications Board attend a short rehearsal for the Awards Ceremony at Convention.
Council of Editors Award/Alfred K. Kawana Award
The Alfred K. Kawana Council of Editors Award is reserved for outstanding researcher/scholars with a sustained history of exemplary publications in the ASHA journals. This award is named in memory of the late Alfred Kawana, former Director of ASHA's Publications Division, and is given occasionally, but not necessarily annually. Only one recipient is selected in a given year.
Criteria: Recipients shall have, over a period of at least 10 years, authored ASHA journal articles that are meritorious in terms of educational, scientific, or clinical value, and thus contributed significantly to the discipline.
Process: The Council of Editors should discuss annually whether there are currently appropriate candidates for this award. Any of the editors may nominate someone for this award. CVs, or some other record of publication, should be distributed to all members of the Council of Editors for discussion. A recipient shall be notified by the chair of the Publications Board.
