Featured Question - Graduate Student Supervision
I would like to supervise a graduate student but have never done so before. What information is available to help me get started?
Clinical education is vital to the overall development of future professionals. Being a supervisor also has benefits – access to current research and resources through student clinicians, furthering your own clinical skills by teaching others, and the satisfaction of knowing that you are directly contributing to the future of the profession.
To emphasize the importance of clinical education, and to encourage members to supervise graduate students, ASHA recently launched a campaign, called "Supervision Matters." This campaign is multi-faceted and offers:
- A new resource on ASHA's Web site that has information for supervisors at all experience levels, including:
- Tips for first-time supervisors
- Talking points to encourage administrators to allow staff to supervise
- Frequently Asked Questions about what is involved in supervising, as well as specific questions for those working in health care or school settings
- ASHA policy documents related to supervision
- Article from Special Interest Division 11 (Administration and Supervision) and The ASHA Leader
- Teaching Tools on clinical education
- A contest designed to introduce members to the new Web resource (open until November 19 to all ASHA members)
- Badge ribbons at the schools conference and ASHA Convention in Boston to recognize those who contribute to the future of the profession by supervising a student
- An article in The ASHA Leader about supervision
- Supervision Matters bookmarks to remind members about the importance of clinical education
So, if you are interested in becoming a supervisor or have supervised students for years, be sure to check out these resources and stop by the ASHA Member Services Center at convention for more information.

HES and EdFind Have Been Launched! The Higher Education Data System (HES) system is a collaborative effort of ASHA, CAPCSD, and CAA to facilitate comprehensive and consistent data collection and dissemination. Survey completion is critical to ensure all programs are reflected in reports and trends analysis in CSD. Program data and characteristics submitted via the HES will appear in EdFind, the new online search engine for academic programs. EdFind replaces ASHA's online Grad Guide and allows students and others to search for and learn about academic programs in CSD. For more information, please contact us at hes@asha.org.
