Featured Question - Personnel Issues in Health Care
What has ASHA done this year to address personnel shortages in health care?
The Focused Initiative on Personnel Issues in Health Care and Education began in 2005 with a focus on school-related issues. In 2006, strategies addressing speech-language pathology personnel in health care were added. The primary goal for 2006 was to collect data about speech-language pathology shortages and initiatives at state and national levels to address shortages.
ASHA staff traveled to 10 states to meet with the state association executive boards to explore personnel issues in each state, as well as to present on the future of speech-language pathology in health care. The states visited in 2006 include: Arizona, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington. In addition, available data and information about speech-language pathology shortages were collected from state early intervention agencies, departments of health, departments of labor, and state hospital associations.
Discussions with key stakeholders in hospitals and long-term care facilities were held to flesh out issues that impact recruiting and retaining SLPs in these settings. Staff also met with external organizations such as the Easter Seals Society, Visiting Nurses Association, and the National Association for Home Care.
In an effort to increase the visibility of the profession and educate others about what SLPs do, articles were placed in the following publications: Home Healthcare Nurse, Caring, the online edition of Advance for Directors in Rehabilitation, and the newsletter for the Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics section of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
A new recruitment brochure has been developed and is now available free of charge for members. This brochure, Reward Yourself with a Career in Health Care, highlights the benefits and unique aspects of working in health care settings and can be used when talking with middle- and high-school students, as well as undergraduates and others interested in the profession. The first 100 members that contact ASHA and indicate how they will use the brochures in recruitment efforts are eligible for a $50 gift certificate. Contact the Action Center at (800) 498-2071 or actioncenter@asha.org to receive the brochure (item #0804272).
Additional information about Focused Initiative Strategies and outcomes are available on the ASHA Web site:
