  • Using Blue Dye in Dysphagia Evaluations – see question#7 (Members only)
    Since the publication of the FDA advisory on possible negative consequences of using blue dye in tube feedings, many facilities have banned any use of blue dye, including for swallowing evaluations. Read more about the FDA advisory and issues surrounding the use of blue dye.

  • New ASHA Documents on Videofluoroscopy: Guidelines and Knowledge & Skills  (Members only)
    Two new Desk Reference documents were recently published regarding the performance of videofluoroscopic swallowing studies, including knowledge and skills and guidelines. Full-text versions of these and all ASHA documents are available online to members.

  • Physician Supervision Issues for FEES (Members only)
    By ASHA policy, SLPs with established competency in the performance of endoscopic evaluations of swallowing can perform these procedures independently. Read more about the issues surrounding FEES, including the need for physician supervision.

  • Dysphagia Correct Coding Edits
    The National Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) was established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to detect procedures that have been inappropriately performed on the same day. Read more about CCI edits for billing swallowing and speech procedures.

  • Take Action - Separate SLP and PT in Medicare Outpatient Statute
    Take 5 minutes to help advance two bills – S.568 and H.R. 1995 – that allow SLPs to directly bill the Medicare program. Contact your members of Congress and ask that they support this legislation. You can make a difference: visit ASHA's advocacy site.

What is ASHA's position on new treatment techniques for swallowing?

ASHA does not typically evaluate assessment or treatment programs, products, or procedures. However, ASHA is committed to evidence-based practice and strongly urges members to critically evaluate available evidence for all areas of practice. In an attempt to assist members in making informed decisions about new treatment techniques and programs, ASHA has developed a list of questions the practitioner should ask themselves before using a technique, purchasing a product, or attending a program. The following resources provide more information about how to evaluate new techniques:
