Treatment Tip Submission Form
This month's tip comes from Denise Rogers, MA, CCC-SLP of Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
When you recommend a patient for an outpatient MBS, send a narrative with them to the other SLP. Describe the results of your clinical exam, the currently recommended diet, a brief synopsis of their course of therapy with you and what you are specifically looking to resolve with the objective study.
For example: "patient fatigues easily - please feed entire meal and do not start fluoro until 1/3 or 1/2 of meal is consumed" or "patient is an impulsive eater; do some fluoro while feeding them and then allow them to self-feed."
The SLP and radiologist doing the MBS will be grateful to you for not wasting their time and you're more likely to get the answer you were hoping the study would reveal.

Featured Question - Health Care Settings
I have worked in long-term care for many years. I am moving to a new city and have found a job in an acute-care setting. What do I need to know about working in this setting?
Each health care setting presents unique opportunities and challenges. Documentation requirements differ, the patient population varies, and the SLPs' role may vary. Health care settings include acute-care hospitals, long-term acute care, acute inpatient rehabilitation, sub-acute rehabilitation, pediatric hospitals, long-term care, home care, and outpatient clinics. In addition, other residential settings and private practices operate within the health care system. ASHA has developed a series of resources that distinguish between these settings and provide SLPs (or students interested in working in health care) with information about what it takes to get started in each setting. In addition, issue briefs are available that provide more details about acute-care, inpatient rehabilitation, long-term care, and home-care settings.
Resources on Health Care Settings
Additional information about these settings and working in health care in general can be found on the health care section of ASHA's Web site.

2008 Minority Student Leadership Program Call for Applications is Now Open! The Minority Student Leadership Program is open to students who wish to enhance their leadership skills, interact with leaders in the professions, and learn how their association works. Now in its 10th year, this program has given over 275 students from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds insight into their leadership abilities, a better understanding of how leaders affect change within ASHA, and has empowered these students to take risks and meet their own challenges. All students are eligible to apply; however, preference will be given to students from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds that have historically been under-represented in the Association. Visit the MSLP FAQs for more information and to download an application packet.
