Did You Know About ASHA's online Directory of Speech-Language Pathology Assessment Instruments?

The Directory of Speech-Language Pathology Assessment Instruments was developed in response to frequent requests from ASHA members for information on assessments related to speech-language pathology. It was designed to provide speech-language pathologists with a comprehensive reference of assessment tools used to screen or evaluate the speech, language, cognitive-communication, literacy, and swallowing abilities of individuals across the life span.

Featured Question - Medical Record Retention

How long must I keep patient records? Does ASHA have any requirements about retaining medical records?

ASHA does not have a policy on record retention. Each state may have unique medical record retention laws that vary by setting or type of record. In addition, federal law (HIPAA), payers, and regulatory or accrediting agencies may have regulations governing record retention. It is advisable to know all applicable regulations and abide by the most stringent.

Read more about federal and state record retention regulations, as well as whether or not digital and video images must be kept as part of the medical record on ASHA's Web site.
