- Evidence-based practice resources available online (members only)
Evidence-based practice is a perspective on clinical decision-making that originated in evidence-based medicine, and has been defined as "... the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients... [by] integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research" (Sackett, Rosenberg, Gray, Haynes, & Richardson, 1996, p. 71). Learn more about EBP and access links to literature review sites.
- ASHA emphasizes Evidence-Based Practice (members only)
As part of its 2005 Focused Initiative, ASHA has identified evidence-based practice issues as important to the future of the profession of speech-language pathology and has dedicated financial and staff resources to address this issue. Read more about identified outcomes under this focused initiative.
- Latest on treatment efficacy [PDF] (members only)
Administrators, payers and clients are increasing questioning the efficacy of various clinical interventions. To address these questions, ASHA recently updated efficacy summaries in 16 clinical areas. These summaries can be used to support treatment or appeal reimbursement denials.
- Outcomes data available (members only)
To support the need for speech-language pathology services for various communication disorders and populations, an SLP often needs to provide outcomes data. Through the National Outcomes Measurement System (NOMS), ASHA members have been collecting outcomes data that may assist you with administrators, clients, and payers.

Featured Question – What is health literacy?
Healthy People 2010, the landmark document that tracks the progress of public health in this decade in the United States, defines health literacy as "the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions." Evidence-based practice incorporates not only scientific evidence and clinical expertise, but also patient values when determining the "best" treatment for an individual. Issues surrounding health literacy need to be addressed to ensure that the patient understands and appreciates the information shared with them regarding assessment or treatment, and to allow patients to contribute to the practice of evidence-based practice.
