Headlines

  • Midterm Election Results Likely to Impact Education Issues
    Federal Election Results
The 2006 elections dramatically changed the power structure in Congress. For the first time in 12 years, the Democratic Party will control both the House of Representatives and the Senate. After leadership elections, the first order of business when Congress reconvenes on December 5th is to pass the remaining FY 2007 spending bills. The 110th Congress will likely take up reauthorization of the Higher Education Act next year, and at least begin hearings and consideration of the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act.
    State Election Results
Mirroring the Democrats' momentum in the Congressional elections, the party regained control of the majority of state governors' seats for the first time in more than a decade. At the statehouse level, 46 states held legislative elections. Democrats regained full or partial control of at least eight state legislatures, giving them control of more legislatures than the Republicans for the first time since 2000.

The purpose of the CEF is to provide its members, the general public, the United States Congress, the Executive Branch, and the press with information about the need for adequate financial support for federal education programs. For more information on CEF, contact Neil Snyder at nsnyder@asha.org.

Featured Question

Q: What steps is ASHA taking to address the personnel shortage in speech-language pathology?

A: In September, ASHA hosted a forum on Strategizing Solutions to SLP Personnel Shortages, which included discussion and brainstorming sessions as well as presentation of successful models and solutions for strategies. Also, ASHA has developed a comprehensive resource titled Personnel Issues in Education: Recruitment and Retention of Qualified Speech-Language Pathologists in the Public Schools, which outlines strategies from various states, school districts and universities across the country that have found success in recruiting and retaining qualified speech-language pathologists. Within this resource, ASHA also presents data from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the issue of supply and demand, barriers to successful recruitment/retention as well as other pertinent information.
