Headlines

  • ASHA Responds to Hurricane Victims
In response to members affected by recent storms along the Gulf Coast, ASHA has developed a web page to support members and students as they rebuild their lives. Visit Getting and Giving Help: Support for Hurricane Victims to learn more.
  • National Coalition on Personnel Shortages
The National Coalition on Personnel Shortages - formed to bring together organizations representing administrators, policy makers, special education personnel, and consumers has met regularly to sustain a dialogue about personnel shortages, share existing resources, brainstorm possible solutions, and determine recommendations for action. The group's mission is to affirm the value of special education, related services and early intervention and to identify strategies to remedy personnel shortages at the national, state, and local level. As part of ASHA's Focused Initiative on Personnel Issues, we are partnering with the National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE) to lead this effort and are providing assistance to states interested in forming similar groups at the state level. A number of states have initiatives under way. To find out more about the National Coalition, go to ASHA's press release. If you are interested in learning more about what's happening at the state level, contact your local state association or ecrowe@asha.org.
  • New Brochure on the Benefits of Working in Schools
ASHA has developed a brochure designed to: entice high school students to choose a school-based speech-language pathology career, attract college graduates to school settings, and to help career SLPs choose school-based practice. The brochure, which will be useful to administrators and those in the position of hiring school-based SLPs, highlights the top ten reasons for choosing a career in the schools and the requirements for school-based practice. Quotes from school-based SLPs on why their career in the schools is rewarding will be included. Check out Reward Yourself With a Career as a School-Based Speech-Language Pathologist at the ASHA Convention in November and on the ASHA Web site early next year.
  • ASHA Team Working to Reduce Shortage of Qualified SLPs
ASHA's Personnel Issues Qualification Team is working with targeted states to develop strategies for maintaining personnel standards and reducing the shortages of qualified personnel in schools. The team has identified state committees, developed action plans and begun working on specific strategies. This initiative is part of ASHA's 2005 Focused Initiative on Personnel Issues. To learn more go to Focused Initiatives: 2005.

Featured Question - What are the ethical responsibilities of an ASHA certified school-based speech-language pathologist?

Challenges occur as SLPs implement IDEA, supervise non-certified SLPs or speech assistants, and deal with a dynamic caseload. Read  ASHA's Code of Ethics and a selection of writings from a variety of sources including The ASHA Leader, Perspectives, (Special Interest Division 16 newsletter), ASHA products and journal articles for information on ethical issues in the schools (member benefit). For additional information on ethics, visit ASHA's Ethics webpage (member benefit).
