Headlines

  • IDEA '04 Update
ASHA has released its preliminary analysis of the proposed regulations on Part B and D of IDEA '04. It is anticipated that ASHA's comments to the US Department of Education will be available by the end of August. Members wishing to comment are urged to go to ASHA's Take Action site. Comments must be received by September 6th.
  • Texas Defeats Legislative Effort to Lower Standards for School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs)
The Texas Speech-Language Hearing Association (TSHA) successfully lobbied to uphold the Master's degree as the standard of practice for school based SLPs. TSHA was able to convince the legislature of the negative effect that lowering standards would have on children receiving services in the Texas schools.
  • Loan Forgiveness Act for SLPs Proposed in Congress
An amendment to the Higher Education Act (HR 609) has been proposed which would provide $5000 in loan forgiveness for SLPs with a minimum of a Master's degree who are employed in school settings. The bill was sent to the full House for consideration. While ASHA has been instrumental in getting this amendment included in HR 609, the bill has many hurdles to pass including approval from the Senate and Joint Conference Committee, before it goes to President Bush for signature.
  • ASHA's School Finance Committee Needs Your Help!
ASHA is seeking feedback and/or questions from members regarding school finance issues. Established in 2004, the committee is tasked with helping school-based members identify and understand complex funding processes at the national, state and local level. To submit questions about school funding email AccessSchools@asha.org.
  • Licensed in Florida?
ASHA has good news for you! We will transmit your ASHA CEUs to Florida's continuing education tracking database, CE Broker. But first ASHA needs your FL license number(s) and permission to transmit the CEUs. For more information email ContinuingEd@asha.org.
  • We Need You to Take a S.T.E.P. Forward!
Mentoring can make the difference between a good year and a great year for an undergraduate or graduate student. ASHA invites you to become a mentor and join the Student To Empowered Professional (S.T.E.P) mentoring program. It takes less than 5 hours per month to share the passion of the profession! Featured Question - What is Early Intervening and how does it impact school-based SLPs?

Early Intervening support services are designed to help students K-12 who have not yet been identified with disabilities. These services may decrease unnecessary student referrals to special education. Learn more about Early Intervening Services on ASHA's Web site. (This should not be confused with Early Intervention which focuses on children with disabilities ages birth to three).
