Headlines

  • May is Better Hearing and Speech Month
    This annual event provides opportunities to raise awareness about communication disorders and to promote treatment that can improve the quality of life for those who experience problems with speaking, understanding, or hearing. We have many resources to help you celebrate BHSM (member benefit) every day.

  • WV Passes Salary Supplement Legislation for School-Based SLPs
    The West Virginia legislature passed salary supplement legislation during the 2006 legislative session. The bill grants select nationally certified SLPs, audiologists, and counselors employed in the public schools a $2500 annual bonus beginning in September. This outcome was the result of a multi-year collaborative effort between the West Virginia Speech-Language-Hearing Association and ASHA's State Education Action Team.

  • ASHA to Host National Forum on Personnel Shortages
    ASHA will host a national forum to address the issue of shortages of SLPs in Health Care and Education and to discuss the implementation of innovative solutions. The forum will be held at the National Office in Rockville, MD, Sept. 28-30 and will include selected speakers and participants representing universities, schools, health care settings, government agencies, and other employers.

    As part of ASHA's Focused Initiative on Personnel Shortages to address personnel needs in schools and health care, a list of innovative program models and other partnerships for educating SLPs has been compiled: Listing of Innovative Academic Program Models [PDF] (member benefit).   • School Matters Celebrates 1st Anniversary!
    School Matters was developed by the National Education Data Partnership to educate and inform educators, policy makers and parents with education data to help them with decisions about school programs and services.

  • ASHA Submits Comments on NCLB 2% Rule (member benefit)
    ASHA recently submitted comments to the US Department of Education on the proposed 2% rule which would permit states to develop modified achievement standards and assessments that measure achievement based on those standards.

  • Commission on NCLB Holds Hearing
    The Commission on NCLB headed by former HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson and former Georgia Gov.Roy Barnes held the first in a series of hearings on NCLB in April. The hearings will help the commission formulate its recommendations on teacher quality, recruitment, retention, and distribution.

Announcements

  • ASHA's Public Awareness Campaign
    ASHA's Public Relations team has mounted an aggressive public awareness campaign on the potential link between the usage of some popular technology devices that provide audio through ear buds or earphones (Apple's iPod, other MP3 players, and portable DVD players) and hearing loss.

    ASHA will soon introduce the "Buds"—two little cartoon ear-bud characters—which will be featured on free bookmarks, banners, posters, and screensavers for members to use in their outreach efforts for Better Hearing and Speech Month. (member benefit). The "Listen to Your Buds" theme will be aimed at children ages 5-10 and encourage them to listen safely.

  • Gifts to the Grad Program
    2006 Master's and Doctoral degree graduates are eligible for the Gifts to the Grad Program. Join ASHA between May 1 and August 31, 2006 and receive up to 19 months of membership and certification for the price of 12, through December 31, 2007. Potential savings of $350!

  • ASHA and the National Coalition on Personnel Shortages
    ASHA has partnered with the Personnel Center at the National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE) to address strategies related to personnel issues. The Personnel Center, funded by the U.S. Dept of Education, provides information on successful recruitment, preparation and retention strategies for increasing the quantity and quality of practicing professionals in the field of special education. 

  • Reading Rockets Free Webcast
    Watch "From Babbling to Books: Building Pre-Reading Skills" a free Webcast from Reading Rockets! This 60-minute program stresses the importance of working with young children early to develop language and pre-reading skills. It will provide adults who work with young children research-based strategies that can help build the foundation for strong readers.
