Headlines

  • New Commission on No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
The Aspen Institute in Washington DC launched a new commission on NCLB on Feb. 15, 2006. With the Act set to expire on Sept. 30, 2007, this bipartisan commission will examine the strengths and weaknesses of NCLB and make recommendations to Congress, the Administration, and state and local stakeholders to ensure that the law is an effective tool in increasing academic achievement and closing the achievement gap.

  • President's FY 2007 Budget proposes to cut the Department of Education budget by $3.1 billion
If approved, the President's plan would mean the largest percentage cut for the Department of Education in a decade. It is important to remember that this is only the first step in the budget process. It will be debated in Congress and will eventually be sent back to the President for approval. For a comprehensive analysis of the budget, go to the Committee for Education Funding.

  • ETS to air Web-based seminars on Assessments
ETS will host free web seminars for educators in select states in March. The "Webinars" will be open to all educators who want to learn about using standards-aligned assessment to drive instruction and improve student achievement. These one-hour sessions can be accessed from school or home. To learn more contact ETS at 866-ETS-LEARN.

  • ASHA Journals Now Available on HighWire
ASHA has partnered with HighWire to publish its journals online. Explore the new features and visit the journal sites.

  • Innovative Programs
As part of the Focused Initiative on Personnel Issues in Health Care and Education, ASHA is gathering information about programs and initiatives that have helped to decrease the number of vacancies in health care and schools by increasing the availability of qualified speech-language pathologists and audiologists. If your university, school, health care facility, or other agency has been involved in such an initiative, we'd like to hear from you. We are particularly interested in projects that involved partnerships across stakeholders.

Please email a paragraph briefly describing the innovative project and its outcomes; include the contact person and affiliation, as well as partners who contributed to the project. Please send the information to lmcneilly@asha.org by April 1, 2006. Thank you for helping us with the identification of programs that can serve as models for others.
