  • IDEA '04: ASHA Team Analyzes New Law
    In the first of a series of three documents, ASHA's IDEA review team has begun to analyze the new law beginning with the two areas of greatest interest to members: qualified provider and paperwork reduction. The ASHA review team provides an overview of each issue, implications for ASHA members, steps that ASHA is undertaking to assist members and what members can do.

  • ED Solicits Comments Prior to IDEA Proposed Rulemaking
    The U.S. Dept. Of Education's (ED) Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) issued a notice in the Dec. 29, 2004 Federal Register soliciting comments and recommendations on the regulatory issues of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA '04) that was signed into law by President Bush on Dec. 3, 2004. Feedback may be sent by e-mail and should be received on or before Feb. 28 to be assured of consideration.

    OSERS will also hold a series of regional meetings early this year in Newark, DE. Columbus, OH. Boston, MA. San Diego, CA. Atlanta, GA. Laramie, WY and Washington, DC.   • Early Reading First Grants Available
    The U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced the availability of the 2005 Early Reading First grants in the Dec. 23, 2004 Federal Register , as well as final procedures, requirements, and priorities for this competition. Applications became available Dec. 28, 2004.

  • Reading Comprehension Approaches Assessed in New Study
    Reading is a critical foundation of learning, yet many children struggle to learn this important skill. Further, there is controversy about how best to teach reading and educators face conflicting advice from experts. A new scientifically-based study will focus on four reading comprehension approaches. The ED has partnered with Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. to conduct this study. Visit the National Study of the Effectiveness of Reading Comprehension Interventions to read more about this study.

  • Schools Survey 2004 Now Available Online!
    The recently released 2004 survey includes reports on caseload, salaries and workforce as well as survey methodology, respondent demographics and glossary. Included on this Web page is the "Study of Personnel Needs in Special Education."
