ASHA Awarded 2009 Peerless Rockville Preservation Award

(Rockville, MD - June 18, 2009) The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has received a 2009 Preservation Award from Peerless Rockville, which safeguards and promotes Rockville's past by presenting buildings, spaces, objects, and information important to the city's heritage.

Peerless Rockville Preservation Awards honor individuals, organizations, institutions, and businesses which preserve or enhance Rockville's architectural character and/or heritage.

ASHA's new national office building, which opened in December 2007, was recognized for its "green" design, construction, and interior work. It is located at 2200 Research Boulevard, Rockville.

"First and foremost our new office building is a functional and efficient site where ASHA's members and staff can conduct the work of the association in a setting that enables us to keep our operating costs down," ASHA Executive Director Arlene Pietranton says. "We also know that utilizing environmentally-friendly practices is the right thing to do and is in line with ASHA's values."

ASHA's building received Gold-LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council last year. At the time, ASHA was the first non-profit association in Maryland to receive Gold designation.

The LEED certification recognizes ASHA's environmental friendliness in key areas such as sustainability, water efficiency, energy usage, and materials and resources. In addition, the building rated well for its indoor environmental quality, innovation, and design.

ASHA's national office, which is five stories and a total of 133,870 square feet, houses 250 employees. A portion of the fifth floor is available for lease. Interested parties are welcome to contact Pete Hill-Byrne or Greg Klein with Vanguard Realty at 301-795-1440 or 301-795-1450 respectively regarding lease arrangements.
