(Rockville, MD - February 21, 2007) To help busy parents teach their young children critical speech and language skills, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has developed a new, one-of-a-kind book, Talking on the Go, which provides short, easy to use, and fun everyday activities for adults to practice with their children.
Consumer-friendly, Talking on the Go is based on proven research about the way young children develop speech, language, and listening skills.
"Because the development of speech and language skills are strongly linked to thinking ability, social relations, reading and writing, and school success, Talking on the Go should be one book that all parents of young children should have," ASHA President Noma Anderson explains. "The great thing about it is that it teaches critical speech and language skills in a way that is fun for children and adults alike."
Talking on the Go features more than 300 daily activities to enhance speech and language development and focuses on four major areas: building vocabulary, listening and speech production, reading and writing readiness, and participation in conversations. The book, targeted to parents of children between the ages of newborn to five, gives tips for four everyday settings and activities: in the home, playing outside, taking a ride, and being at the supermarket.
According to a recent CareerBuilder.com survey, more than one-third of parents are dissatisfied with their work/life balance and would like to have more time to spend helping their children learn. Talking on the Go can help because it offers simple, everyday activities as opportunities for children to learn. "This consumer-friendly book offers families, daycare, and preschool staff specific 'in the moment' ideas for utilizing the vast array of communication occasions that exist within the context of daily routines," according to Dr. Froma Roth, Professor of the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences, University of Maryland.
Talking on the Go is priced at $29 for ASHA members and $40 for nonmembers. It can be ordered by calling ASHA at 1-800-638-8255 or shopping online. For more information email productsales@asha.org.
