Initial Licensure Requirements
- Master's degree or equivalent
- Supervised clinical practicum
- Nine months of postgraduate supervised clinical fellowship
- Passage of a Board-approved examination
Exemptions
- Physicians and their employees/supervisees
- Hearing aid dealer
- Credentialed employees of public or state schools
- Students appropriately titled as interns or trainees
- Clinical fellows
Reciprocity
- Persons licensed in other states with equivalent standards
- CCC holders
Interim Practice/Temporary Licensure
- Unlicensed persons who meet state licensure requirements may provide services for no more than 5 days per calendar year in cooperation with a state-licensed speech-language pathologist or audiologist.
- Persons licensed in another state may provide services for no more than 30 days per calendar year in cooperation with a state-licensed speech-language pathologist or audiologist.
Continuing Education for Licensure Renewal
- Applicants must complete 20 contact hours per year.
- Continuing education units may include ASHA approved activities, university coursework, American Academy of Audiology activities, or other programs approved by the Board.
Hearing Aid Dispensing
Audiologists who dispense must first obtain a hearing aid specialist license.
Support Personnel
- Licensees supervising a speech-language pathology assistant or audiometric technician shall register such persons with the Board.
- Speech-language pathology assistants and audiometric technicians must be 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, have good moral character, and be ASHA certified.
- Annual training to maintain proficiency in clinical management procedures must be conducted.
- Licensees may not supervise more than 3 assistants/technicians.
Note
- The abbreviation SLP or SP stands for Speech Language Pathology or Pathologist, as appropriate, the abbreviation AUD stands for Audiology or Audiologist, as appropriate, and the abbreviation HAD stands for Hearing Aid Dealer.
- All jurisdictions require applicants to achieve a passing score on a national exam, and all but Nevada, North Dakota, and Virginia require applicants to complete a post graduate professional experience requirement.
- The term "clinical fellow," used throughout, means a person completing the post graduate professional experience requirement.
