Initial Licensure Requirements
Audiologist
- Through December 31, 2006, hold not less than a master's degree, or the equivalent, with a major emphasis in audiology from a regionally accredited academic institution offering a graduate or post baccalaureate professional degree program in audiology that meets or exceeds prevailing national standards. After December 31, 2006, each audiology applicant shall hold not less than a post baccalaureate residential or a post-master's distance education professional doctor of audiology degree (AuD), a doctor of philosophy degree (PhD) with emphasis in audiology, or its equivalent as determined by the Board, from a regionally accredited institution.
- Through December 31, 2006, submit evidence of completion of supervised clinical practicum experience that meets or exceeds prevailing national standards from a regionally accredited educational institution or its cooperating programs, the content of which shall be approved by the Board and delineated in the rules. After December 31, 2006, applicants applying with a residential doctor of audiology professional degree (AuD) must demonstrate preparation that includes 3 years of didactic coursework and clinical education equivalent to a 12-month full-time clinical rotation or externship.
- Through December 31, 2006, submit evidence of completion of supervised postgraduate professional experience, as approved by the Board and described in the rules. After December 31, 2006, applicants will be required to present to the Board only a copy of the doctor of audiology diploma along with a transcript demonstrating clinical experience equivalent to a 12-month, full-time clinical rotation or externship, a copy of the doctor of philosophy diploma with an emphasis in audiology, and a transcript reflecting a 12-month clinical rotation or externship, or the equivalent as determined by the Board, from an accredited academic institution in order to demonstrate completion of the clinical rotation or externship requirement.
- Pass examinations approved by the Board, whether or not administered by the Board. The Board shall determine the subject and scope of the examinations and shall provide for examinations to qualified applicants at least twice a year. Only the Board has the power to determine whether an examination has been passed or failed.
- U.S. citizen, a U.S. state noncitizen national, or a qualified alien
- Have not committed any acts described in this practice act for which disciplinary action may be justified
- Be of good moral character.
Speech-Language Pathologist
- Master's degree or equivalent with a major emphasis in speech-language pathology from a regionally accredited academic institution offering a graduate program in speech-language pathology that meets or exceeds prevailing national standards
- Completion of a supervised clinical practicum experience that meets or exceeds prevailing national standards from a regionally accredited educational institution or its cooperating programs
- Completion of supervised postgraduate professional experience as approved by the Board
- Pass examinations approved by the Board, whether or not administered by the Board. Only the Board has the power to determine whether an applicant's examination has been passed or failed.
- Attest to status as either a United States citizen, a United States noncitizen national, or a qualified alien.
- Have not committed any acts for which disciplinary action may be justified under this practice act
- Be of good moral character.
Exemptions
- Federal employees
- State employees
- Hearing aid dealers/fitters
- Physicians and their employees/supervisees
- Teachers of persons who are deaf
- Hearing screeners associated with charitable organizations
Reciprocity
- Individuals licensed in another state with equivalent standards
- CCC holders
Interim Practice/Temporary Licensure
- Clinical fellows must obtain a temporary license.
- A nonresident may practice up to 7 days in any calendar year if the person's education/experience is substantially equivalent to state requirements.
Continuing Education for Licensure Renewal
Twenty clock hours per 2-year period.
Hearing Aid Dispensing
Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under an audiology license.
Support Personnel
- Speech-language pathology and audiology assistants must submit an application for authorization to assist signed by both the assistant and supervisor that indicates that the supervisor agrees to supervise the assistant's practice and that the supervisor accepts full and complete responsibility for that practice.
- Before the Board grants authorization for an individual to be designated a speech-language pathology or audiology assistant, the Board will consider the academic training and clinical experience of the applicant, the specific duties and responsibilities he is assigned, the amount and nature of the supervision that is available to him, and the number of such other persons assigned to the proposed supervisor.
- A licensed speech-language pathologist or audiologist may not supervise any more than two assistants.
- The assistant must practice in a geographic setting that permits direct, on-site supervision; the assistant shall practice only at those times when the supervisor is available for on-site supervision, instruction, and assistance.
Telepractice
The provision of speech-language pathology or audiology services in this state through telephonic, electronic, or other means, regardless of the location of the speech-language pathologist or audiologist, shall constitute the practice of speech-language pathology and/or audiology and shall require licensure in this state.
Note
- The abbreviation SLP or SP stands for Speech Language Pathology or Pathologist, as appropriate, the abbreviation AUD stands for Audiology or Audiologist, as appropriate, and the abbreviation HAD stands for Hearing Aid Dealer.
- All jurisdictions require applicants to achieve a passing score on a national exam, and all but Nevada, North Dakota, and Virginia require applicants to complete a post graduate professional experience requirement.
- The term "clinical fellow," used throughout, means a person completing the post graduate professional experience requirement.
