Initial Licensure Requirements
Audiology
- Holds a master's degree in audiology or communication disorders or an equivalent degree awarded prior to January 1, 2007; meets the academic requirements for certification by a nationally recognized speech-language or hearing association
OR
- Has completed the current academic, practicum, and employment experience requirements for a certificate of clinical competence in audiology from a nationally recognized speech-language or hearing association and has passed a nationally recognized standard examination
OR
- Holds a doctoral degree in audiology or equivalent degree regardless of degree name and meets academic requirements for certification by a nationally recognized speech-language or hearing association and has completed the current academic, practicum, and employment requirements of a nationally recognized speech-language or hearing association and has passed a nationally recognized standard examination in audiology
Speech-Language Pathology
- At least a master's degree or equivalent degree (regardless of degree name) and CCC
OR
- Submitted evidence of having completed the current academic, practicum, and employment experience requirements for a CCC and has passed a nationally recognized exam
Exemptions
- Licensed physicians
- Dentists/orthodontists
- Certified teachers of the deaf
- Properly designated students (title clearly indicating the training status)
Reciprocity
The Board shall waive the education and experience requirements for applicants who present proof of current licensure in a state with equivalent standards; the Board or its designee shall evaluate whether another state has equivalent standards or that state must certify that its standards are equivalent to those of New Mexico.
Interim Practice/Temporary Licensure
- An applicant for state licensure may practice for a grace period of 90 days pending the disposition of their licensure application if he/she is already licensed in another state.
- CF must obtain a license.
Continuing Education Requirements for Licensure Renewal
- Must complete 10 clock hours of continuing education per year
- A maximum of 10 clock hours may be carried over to the next renewal period.
Hearing Aid Dispensing
Audiologists may dispense under an audiology license (a dispensing audiologist need not have a separate license for hearing aid dispensing).
Support Personnel
In order to be licensed as a speech-language pathology apprentice an individual must
- Have a bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology or communicative disorders or equivalent degree or a baccalaureate degree in another field with 30 semester hours of credit in speech-language pathology or communicative disorders
- Be accepted in a master's level program within 2 years of initial licensing
- Maintain a 3.0 in master's degree coursework
- Be supervised by a licensed speech-language pathologist with a minimum of 2 years of experience
- Must receive, as an apprentice, a minimum of 10% direct supervision and 10% indirect supervision
Note
- The abbreviation SLP or SP stands for Speech Language Pathology or Pathologist, as appropriate, the abbreviation AUD stands for Audiology or Audiologist, as appropriate, and the abbreviation HAD stands for Hearing Aid Dealer.
- All jurisdictions require applicants to achieve a passing score on a national exam, and all but Nevada, North Dakota, and Virginia require applicants to complete a post graduate professional experience requirement.
- The term "clinical fellow," used throughout, means a person completing the post graduate professional experience requirement.
