New Jersey State Characteristics of Licensure Law

The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of SLP and/or AUD. It is intended for informational use only, and should not be construed as legal advice.

Initial Licensure Requirements

  1. Master's degree or equivalent (75 semester hours; parallel ASHA certification)
    Note: "Equivalent" means holding a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and at least 42 post baccalaureate semester hours acceptable towards a master's degree of at least 30 semester hours in either speech-language pathology or audiology; at least 21 of the 42 hours shall have been obtained from a single college or university; no more than 6 semester hours may be in courses that provide credit for clinical practice obtained during academic training.
  2. Three hundred fifty hour clinical practicum
  3. Clinical fellowship
  4. Passage of an exam

Exemptions

  1. Physicians and persons under the direct supervision/control of a physician, providing such a person is not referred to as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist
  2. The activities, services, and use of an official title on the part of a federal employee
  3. Any person certified as a speech correctionist/speech-language specialist by the State Department of Education
  4. Students, fellows, trainees in audiology or speech-language pathology if services constitute a part of a course of study under a licensed supervisor
  5. Hearing aid dispensers

Reciprocity

The director may waive the examination requirement to persons licensed in a state with equivalent standards.

Interim Practice/Temporary Licensure

  1. The director may issue a temporary license to any new resident who has applied for licensure and who holds a state license in his/her previous state of residence.
  2. Clinical fellows must obtain a temporary license.

Continuing Education for Licensure Renewal

Licensees must complete 20 hours of continuing education per biennium.

Hearing Aid Dispensing

Audiologists who dispense hearing aids must obtain an HAD license.

Note

  • The abbreviation SLP or SP stands for Speech Language Pathology or Pathologist, as appropriate, the abbreviation AUD stands for Audiology or Audiologist, as appropriate, and the abbreviation HAD stands for Hearing Aid Dealer.
  • All jurisdictions require applicants to achieve a passing score on a national exam, and all but Nevada, North Dakota, and Virginia require applicants to complete a post graduate professional experience requirement.
  • The term "clinical fellow," used throughout, means a person completing the post graduate professional experience requirement.
