New Hampshire Characteristics of State Teacher Requirements

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

This information has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Please be advised that regulations and policy may change at any time, so always check with your state department of education for the most up-to-date information.

Audiologist

State Licensure

  1. A master's degree, a doctorate of philosophy or doctorate of audiology or its equivalent such as, the AuD credential as administered by the Audiology Foundation of America; the degree and credential shall have been received from an educational institution or organization recognized by any of the following: Academy of Dispensing Audiology, Audiology Foundation of America, American Academy of Audiology, or ASHA. Official transcripts must show 75 semester credit hours.
  2. 350 hours of clinical practicum
  3. Nine months of postgraduate professional experience
  4. Written national exam administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) or by the American Academy of Dispensing Audiology, the Audiology Foundation of America, the American Academy of Audiology, or ASHA

Note:

In lieu of the requirements listed above, the applicant may submit evidence of a Certificate of Clinical Competence in audiology or doctorate of audiology or equivalent such as the AuD as administered by the Audiology Foundation of America.

Continuing Education Requirement

20 hours per biennial renewal cycle. May carry over ten hours from one renewal cycle to the next.

Speech-Language Pathologist

To be certified as a speech-language specialist, a candidate shall meet the following entry-level requirements relative to education and experience:

  1. The general education requirements specified in 609.01 (comprised of coursework in the liberal arts including humanities, mathematics, biological and physical sciences, social and behavioral sciences, and information retrieval skills, including the use of technology)
  2. The professional education requirements specified in 610.02, 610.03 and 610.04
    (Section 610.02 requires background in human growth and development, classroom management, citizenship development, educational disabilities, methods of teaching, foundations of education, legal rights and responsibilities of educators and techniques for teaching reading and reading comprehension. Section 610.03 requires prospective educators to observe school-age youth in a variety of settings to determine career decision making. Section 610.04 requires a culminating, full-time, field-based experience or student teaching)
  3. Hold a master's degree in speech-language pathology or communication disorders from an approved college or university and meet the speech-language specialist competencies
    or
    Hold a bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology or communication disorders and a master's degree from an approved college or university in an area of education that allows one to meet the speech-language specialist competencies.

    Any person licensed in the state of New Hampshire as a speech-language pathologist by the board of speech-language pathology shall be considered to have met the requirement of this rule.

Continuing Education Requirement

75 clock hours are required every three years.

Emergency Certification

Speech-Language Specialty has been identified as a Critical Shortage Area for 2004-2005.  For critical shortage areas, applicants may use Certification Alternative IV. Individuals must document a bachelor's degree and, by plan completion, candidates for Speech-Language Specialist must obtain a master's degree in education, speech-language pathology or communication disorders from an approved college or university.
